Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A plan to develop a new parking site for Mayo Clinic employees is on its way to the Rochester City Council.

It was approved Wednesday night on a 3-2 vote by the Planning and Zoning Commission. The council is expected to review the proposal next month.

The commission approved a recommendation from the city’s Community Development department to allow the site at the former Kmart store property to proceed in two phases, each containing about 600 spaces. The Kmart building would have to be demolished to make way for the second phase.

The commission was told it will be used for St Marys Hospital workers.

Because of zoning requirements, the proposed Park and Ride site would have to be designated a public lot. Under the proposal, the city would lease the property from the owner and sublease it to Mayo.

Staff recommended a 10-year agreement. The commission recommended a five-year deal.

The council could accept the recommendation, reject it or modify it.
