Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  It will now be up to the Rochester City Council to decide the fate of one of the oldest buildings in the downtown.

The Days Inn opened nearly 100 years ago as the Carlton Hotel and some citizens feel it should be preserved rather than face the wrecking ball.

Tuesday night, the city’s Heritage Preservation Commission voted 6-4 to designate it as a landmark property which would make it tougher for the owner to make changes or even sell it.

The recommendation is expected to be finalized and reviewed by the commission next month and then go to the City Council in March. At this point, it’s not known if the Council will take public input before it votes on the recommendation.
