Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Byron man has admitted to felony charges connected to the theft of mail from mailboxes in the Byron and Rochester areas last year. 21-year-old Evan Prendez went before an Olmsted County Judge today and entered guilty pleas to mail theft and fleeing police charges.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred last October in Byron beginning when an Olmsted County Deputy encountering Prendez while investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle. While the deputy was approaching his vehicle on foot, Prendez began backing up, forcing the deputy to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. Prendez got away, but the deputy was able to jot down the license number of the vehicle and recognized Prendez as the driver.

When authorities later located Prendez they discovered what a Sheriff’s Department spokesman described as “a significant amount of stolen mail” inside the vehicle. Court documents later indicated there were over 160 items from almost 60 different addresses.

He is scheduled to be sentenced March 13th.

A 26-year-old woman was also charged in the case. 26-year-old Chelsea Jenkins is currently wanted on an arrest warrant charging her with felony mail theft.
