Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The new year in the Rochester area began with bitterly cold weather - the coldest since the 2021 polar vortex that lasted several days in February. 

The high temperature at the Rochester airport on Saturday was six degrees - at 12:24 am.

The mercury slipped below zero around 6:00 am and will struggle to get back into the positive range through Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s unofficial low was -15 degrees.  It was -10 degrees at 10:00 am.

It was twice as cold in NE Minnesota Sunday morning.

 

Temperatures are expected to moderate Monday but another round of very cold weather will arrive by mid-week. Lows Friday morning could reach -15 degrees again.

The Rochester area may not experience above-freezing weather again until the end of the month.

Rochester’s official temperature slipped below the freezing mark around 9:00 am last Monday.  Accuweather's long-range forecast predicts below-freezing weather until Jan 29th when the high may reach 33 degrees.
