Preston, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester Police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave in the wake of a fatal officer involved shooting Sunday night in Fillmore County.

A press release issued by Fillmore County Sheriff Tom Kaase indicates the officer is a member of the Rochester/Olmsted County Emergency Response Unit that was called to a rural Fillmore County residence where a suspect in a domestic assault had been located and refused to cooperate with Fillmore County Deputies.

Sheriff Kaase says the tactical team was requested because of the suspect’s prior history and reported access to weapons. At some point during the incident, the Rochester Police Officer engaged the armed suspect and fired his weapon, killing the suspect.

The name of the suspect has not been released. The officer involved was identified by Rochester Police as Sergeant Steve Thompson, a 19-year veteran of the police department. The shooting is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
