Masood was arrested at the Twin Cities airport in March 2020 as he was allegedly embarking on a journey that would eventually take him to Syria. According to federal court documents, Masood allegedly made statements to others pledging his allegiance to the Islamic State group and expressing his desire to fight for ISIS in Syria. It was also alleged that he expressed his desire to conduct so-called "lone wolf" terrorist attacks in the United States.

His conviction was the result of an investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
