Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A domestic assault led to an over four-hour long standoff in Southeast Rochester last night.

Police Captain John Sherwin says officers were called to the Sutton Place Apartments at 1903 17th Street Southeast near Longfellow Elementary School around 7:30 p.m. after a man allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.

The 43-year-old woman was running out of the apartment when officers arrived at the scene and when they went to the residence of 37-year-old Jesse Devriendt, he yelled out that he had a gun and threatened to shoot the officers. Sherwin says the officers then backed away from the apartment and called in the local Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators.

During the resulting standoff, Devriendt broke out a window and threw some items from the apartment to the ground. He also threatened to start a fire before members of the tactical team entered the residence and took him into custody. At that point, the officers involved determined he did not have a gun.

Sherwin says Devriendt is being held at the Olmsted County jail on felony domestic assault and terroristic threats charges.
