Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Large unpaid bills and dwindling resources are threatening the operations of Rochester Civic Theater.

The financial situation and future of the non-profit organization will be discussed Tuesday by a City Council committee. The agenda for the meeting includes this note:

“From the City Administrator’s perspective, there are significant concerns with the Civic Theatre’s financial condition and its long-term sustainability. Additional analysis is necessary prior to making any formal recommendations. A new model for performing arts services may need to be evaluated for the space currently exclusively leased to the Civic Theatre.”

The city currently contributes $200,000 to RCT’s budget.

RCT’s report on 2019 cash flow from operating activities shows revenues of $873,000 and expenses of $1.25-million.

Current financial reports show RCT has total liabilities of $733,000 and total assets of $628,000. Current liabilities were listed at $360,000. A summary of vendor bills as of Dec. 31st showed nearly $140,000 in IOUs that were over 90 days overdue. They included $30,000 owed to the DoubleTree Hotel, a $29,000 bill from Music Theatre International, $16,000 in unpaid state unemployment insurance premiums, a $16,000 IOU from Hilton Garden Inn and more than $4,000 in unpaid RPU bills.

RCT also learned last month it will not be eligible for grants from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for one year. The decision came after RCT was awarded a $10,000 grant last year for a project that did not take place. After repeated requests to return the money, it was finally repaid a few weeks ago.

RCT’s executive director suddenly resigned in late January. Kevin Miller was hired two years ago following the retirement of Gregory Stavrou in advance of accusations of sexual harassment.
