Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Twin Cities teenager has been arrested and is expected to be charged with the shooting death of a nine-year-old girl in Minneapolis last year.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension today announced that 19-year-old D'Pree Shareef Robinson was taken into custody in Minneapolis and is now being held in the Hennepin County jail. A news release issued by the BCA this afternoon indicates Robinson will likely make his first appearance in court later in the week.
The statement says investigators believe Trinity Ottoson-Smith was "an unintended target of a gang-related drive-by shooting." The little girl was in the backyard of a friend's home in North Minneapolis jumping on a trampoline when she was struck by a bullet on May 15. She died from her injuries 12 days later.
“As we said during the Spotlight on Crime news conference last August, families deserve to know who did this to their children.” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “We have worked diligently to achieve justice for Trinity and her family. This is the first step toward achieving that justice.”
Trinity was among several young children in Minneapolis who were killed or critically wounded in the unconnected shootings last spring. Officials say the investigation into her murder remains active and ongoing.
