Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A former Milwaukee area police officer charged with killing a Twin Cities area woman in Rochester pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder Friday in Olmsted County Court.

55-year-old Steven Zelich was accused of killing 37-year-old Laura Simonson at a Rochester hotel in November 2013.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison - which he will serve after he completes a longer term in Wisconsin. Zelich was sentenced to 45 years in prison in Wisconsin last year for the 2012 murder of an Oregon college student. Her remains and Simonson’s body were found stuffed in suitcases that were left along a rural highway near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 2014.

The Wisconsin case indicated he will be required to serve at least 35 years - which means he will be in his 80’s before he begins his Minnesota sentence.
