Chris Robinson Will Return to Black Crowes Songs on New Tour
Chris Robinson's immediate post-Black Crowes career, perhaps understandably, focused on newer music. Now, Robinson says, he's ready to return to the old songs.
He's constructed a new band, called As the Crow Flies, that features members of both the Black Crowes and his current group, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, for 17 shows this spring. They'll be performing Black Crowes songs like "She Talks to Angels" and "Thorn in My Pride" for the first time in years.
The tour includes stops at Florida's Wanee Music Festival, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Wiltern in Los Angeles, among others. A complete list of announced dates for As the Crow Flies can be found below. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10AM local time.
A rare break in shows for the Chris Robinson Brotherhood led to thoughts of his old band, Robinson said. "For a long time I've been saying, no matter what it looks like, that I'm super proud and privileged to have been in the Black Crowes and write that music and perform that music," he told Rolling Stone. "As an American rock 'n' roll thing, those songs are in people's lives. So, it's always been there that those songs are there."
As the Crow Flies includes guitarist Audley Freed, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and bassist Andy Hess from Robinson's days in the Black Crowes. Drummer Tony Leone and MacDougall are also in Robinson's current band. The group is rounded out by guitarist Marcus King, a Greenville, S.C., blues-rock phenom.
Robinson says As the Crow Flies have no future plans beyond this limited run of shows, which precede another string of concerts for the Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
