Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  It’s a Rochester transportation-related project that has been kicked around for years and never got off the ground.

That may change as a result of action taken by the City Council Monday.

The council approved a $285,000 contract “for conceptual design and engineering services related to the 6th St Bridge.”

The bridge would cross the Zumbro River near the former AMPI dairy site, connecting South Broadway to 3rd Ave. SE and would be designed to accommodate vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

It is seen as a “key connection link to assist with the expansion and growth in Downtown Waterfront Southeast Rochester and as a place where neighborhoods on either side can access the river.”

It would also serve as a major link to the downtown Discovery Walk project.

According to the information reviewed by the council:

The contract includes the development of bridge concepts and estimated costs, public realm designs on and leading to the bridge, and design of public access to the Zumbro River. The work includes the modeling of future traffic to understand the bridge’s impact on surrounding neighborhoods and the development of associated mitigation measures.

The city says development of a 6th St bridge between South Broadway and 3rd Ave SE has been considered as an infrastructure improvement as far back as the adoption of the city’s official street map in 1973.

Previous city councils that considered the bridge ran into strong opposition from neighbors on the east side of 3rd Ave and as far west as the Folwell School neighborhood.

News update:  It could be a significant wildfire smoke event for Minnesota.
