Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The jury deliberating the fate of a Rochester man is having a hard time reaching a verdict.

The panel of 8 women and 4 men this afternoon informed Olmsted County Judge Joseph Chase that they were at an impasse in their efforts to determine if 26-year-old Alexander Weiss is guilty of second-degree murder or was acting in self-defense when he shot and fatally wounded 17-year-old Mohammed Rahim. Weiss opened fire during a confrontation that followed a minor traffic crash in January of last year.

After informing the jury of the ramifications of a hung jury, Judge Chase stated he didn’t believe the 10 hours of deliberations that had taken place were enough to take that step and ordered the jurors to continue their discussions. It’s not known how long the judge will require the jurors to keep deliberating before he considers declaring a hung trial.

That would result in a mistrial and would likely mean a new trial would have to be ordered for Weiss.
