Social Media Posts Spread False Reports of Threats Involving JM
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - “Much ado about nothing.” That’s how Rochester Police Captain John Sherwin described a social media storm that developed last night after a student at John Marshall High School shared a Snapchat post that was apparently misinterpreted by some as threatening.
Sherwin says other students spread the online message after some added completely false information to the post. In one case, a social media user falsely reported the student involved had been arrested with a gun.
Sherwin says an investigation by police and school officials quickly determined there was no credible threat, but the social media postings continued to spread “out of control” yesterday evening.
