Science Museum of Minnesota Announces $10 Million Loss And 158 Job Cuts Due to COVID-19
Another Minnesota favorite has announced that they will be reopening soon. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has caused a $10 million loss in revenue to the Science Museum of Minnesota and over 150 individuals have lost their jobs as a result.
The Science Museum of Minnesota recently shared a description on their Facebook page that described the financial impact that the pandemic has had on their facility:
The Science Museum of Minnesota announced that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the museum’s finances, we will reopen this summer after a five-month closure as a smaller museum, reducing our operations and workforce.
Like so many other businesses and cultural attractions across the nation, the museum closed to the public in mid-March to help slow the transmission of COVID-19. During this closure period, we couldn’t welcome our usual 245,000 visitors, host our beloved summer camp program, or work on other crucial museum projects. In total, the museum lost $10 million in revenues due to pandemic-related changes to our operations.
We had to make these difficult decisions because of the pandemic and the impacts it has had on our business. We want anyone who has ever worked at the Science Museum to know you’ve brought our mission to life and made it a great place to be, and we genuinely appreciate the contributions you’ve made to science, equity, and education. We are deeply saddened for our impacted staff and are doing what we can to ensure a smooth transition.
They do plan on re-opening in late August, although a date has not been provided. The experience will be different than pre-pandemic but according to their website, visitors will still enjoy many of the favorites, including the dinosaurs, Sportsology, RACE exhibition, movies in the Omnitheater, the mummy, and virtual education programs.
The full statement from the Science Museum of Minnesota also included a projection of a $20 million loss of revenue during the 2021 fiscal year. You can read the entire statement here.
