Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  A Rochester man who shot himself has been charged with a felony.

The shooting was reported around 4:00 am July 14 by 42-year-old Andrew Wellner. An officer arrived to find Wellner “lying on the floor in the doorway to his apartment” with a gunshot wound to his left leg.  Wellner told the officer “he shot himself accidentally.”

The officer also “observed a large amount of empty Coors Light beer cans in the living room next to an inflatable air mattress.” An empty shell casing was found in the living room.

According to the criminal complaint, Wellner told officers he “was having a few drinks and watching a movie.” He also said, “He was cleaning his handgun when the gun went off.” He said he then crawled out and knocked on his neighbor’s door to call 911.”

Before Wellner was taken to the hospital, an officer obtained a breath test. It showed his blood/alcohol concentration was .249.

He has been charged with the reckless discharge of a weapon. He has been ordered to make his first court appearance next month.
