PSA: If You Recycle In Rochester, Don’t Crush Aluminum Cans
Maybe it's just me, but there's something extremely satisfying about crushing an aluminum can with a stomp of my foot. It makes me feel powerful. Some of you may have even perfected the skill of being able to crush a beer can with your forehead!
But for those of you who recycle, crushing aluminum cans apparently makes things harder for the people who actually have to recycle them. That's because a flattened soda can could easily be sorted as "paper" by accident, which can contaminate the pile. It could also fall through the spaces of the sorting equipment and be lost entirely. And here I was thinking that I'm doing them a favor by mashing a can of La Croix. Who knew?
But if you love crushing things, hope is not lost! Recycling facilities still recommend crushing plastic bottles - just not aluminum cans.
