Peaceful Ending to Crisis Situation in Rural Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - What started out as a tense situation in rural southwest Rochester Wednesday ended peacefully when a man was taken into police custody incident.
The incident began with a 911 call about a man with a shotgun a few miles west of Rochester at the Izaak Walton League site along Salem Road. Deputies arrived and determined the man with the gun was also the one who called 911. He fired a few shots into the air and then disappeared into the nearby woods.
The local Emergency Response Unit was called in to search for the man, along with a State Patrol helicopter. The Rochester Police Dept.’s drone was also brought to the scene and given its first official use.
The man was located in a cornfield about two hours later and taken to St. Marys Hospital for a mental evaluation.
Olmsted County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Behrns says the 27-year-old Rochester man has been dealing with chemical dependency and mental health issues. It’s not known if he will face criminal charges.
Behrns says up to 50 law enforcement officers were involved in the incident that lasted about four hours.
