Mosquito Tips For Minnesotans Who DON’T Want The West Nile Virus
Maybe it’s just where I live, but I’ve noticed that mosquitoes seem to be pretty thick this summer. That was definitely the case last weekend after days and days of rain here in Rochester. So if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside over the next couple weeks, it’s never a bad idea to be prepared against those annoying critters. Especially because there have been numerous cases of West Nile Virus throughout the country.
Quick refresher on the West Nile Virus: its symptoms include headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and even death. Basically, anything that can really ruin your day.
Here’s another thing I didn’t know; the virus can also infect birds, which can pass on the virus to mosquitoes. Yikes. Luckily, the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has some easy-to-remember tips with the Four D’s of West Nile Virus prevention:
Use insect repellents that contain DEET or picaridin.
Drain standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
Those are both the #1 feeding times for the ‘skeets, so you might want to take the party inside.
Wear your favorite Sunday dress? A kilt? Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants for less skin exposure.
