More Catalytic Converter Kits Available to Olmsted CTY Residents

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office has received another shipment of kits from the Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Pilot Program and is making them available to the public.

The kits utilize a special label that is attached to catalytic converters and transfers a unique number onto the metal once the vehicle is started and the emission control device warms up. Officials say the etching allows law enforcement investigators to trace a recovered catalytic converter back to a specific vehicle, which is crucial in determining if it was stolen.

Olmsted County Sheriff's Captain James Schueller says his office was sent another 100 of the kits from the Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau. They are available for pickup at the Sheriff's Office Civil Warrants Window on the second floor of the Government Center from 8 AM until 4 PM on weekdays.

It is possible to apply the kit as a do-it-yourself project, but assistance is also available by appointment at local vehicle dealerships and many auto repair shops.
