On Friday, August 19th, Jessica Warejoncas, and her friends were hiking near Wiesendanger Falls, less than 35 miles east of Portland, Oregon. She was just upstream from the top of Multnomah Falls when she left the trail and fell 100 feet to the ground below.

The 911 caller said she'd received a severe head injury, but since there's no way to get vehicles to the spot where Warejoncas fell, law enforcement parked at a lodge and hiked just over a mile from the trailhead. When they arrived, bystanders were performing CPR, but to no avail. She was declared dead at the scene.

Warejoncas is from Carlos, Minnesota, about 13 miles north of Alexandria on MN-29. Minnesota's Douglas County Sheriff's Department notified her family Saturday morning, August 20. The family is asking for privacy and does not want to be contacted by the media.

According to the US Forest Service, "Multnomah Falls is the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million stopping by each year to take in the views. Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies but is usually highest during winter and spring. This is also one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods."
