Largest Donation in Winona State History From Son of Famed Artist
Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - Winona State University says the largest financial gift in the history of the institution is from the estate of a graduate who was the son of a famous artist.
Maynard "Mo'' Weber died in 2019 and left $5.26 million to his alma mater. Weber was a 1950 graduate of Winona State University where he completed a bachelor's degree in education after serving in the military during World War II.
He was the son of Max Weber. The WSU news release describes the elder Weber as one of the most significant early American Cubist painters and notes several of his works were previously donated to the school by Weber.
Winona State officials say a portion of the donation will be used to develop a first-class gallery space where paintings by Weber's father and others will be displayed. The donation will also be used for art scholarships and to benefit the Winona State baseball program.
