La La Land’s backlash arrived a little later than expected this awards season, but that didn’t stop the jazzy, bittersweet musical from claiming a top prize at the 2017 Golden Globe awards. In one of the least surprising moments of the evening, Damien Chazelle‘s Whiplash follow-up received the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Next stop: The Oscars, most likely.

This year’s contenders included viable nominees 20th Century Women and Florence Foster Jenkins (never underestimate the power of Meryl Streepespecially in a period piece), a pleasantly surprising nod to Sing Street (which some would argue was last year’s superior musical) and the totally bonkers inclusion of Deadpool — an awards season dark horse if there ever was one.

But it was Chazelle’s ode to music and musicals past that won the hearts of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at this year’s Golden Globes ceremony. La La Land won big on  Sunday night, taking home the Globes for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Emma Stone, Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for Ryan Gosling, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “City of Stars.” Tonight also marked Chazelle’s first Golden Globe nominations (and wins) for Best Motion Picture. Whiplash was previously overlooked by the HFPA in 2015, with the sole nod going to J.K. Simmons, who ultimately won the Globe for his supporting performance.
