We're used to seeing fish in many of our 10,000 lakes here in Minnesota. But on a busy highway? Not so much. But that's what just happened.

Minnesota is home to over 138 species of fish, many of which can be found in the rivers, streams and over 10,000 lakes that make up our fine state. But over three hundred of them were just spotted along a busy highway in Minnesota. Wait, what?

As it turns out, it's all because the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was once again getting ready to stock its fish pond and fish tanks for this year's run of the Minnesota State Fair. And do to that, they had to transport all those fish from the state fish hatchery in St. Paul to the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights.

According to the DNR's X (formerly Twitter) page, everything from paddlefish to sturgeon to gar are all being loaded up and trucked over the to fairgrounds on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023. WCCO says the DNR uses a convoy of six fish transport trucks and two trailers to move these native fish to their temporary home in the DNR's 50,000-gallon pond at the State Fair, which runs from August 24th through Labor Day, September 4th this year.

The DNR noted that if you stop by their fish pond at the State Fair this year and think that some of those fish look familiar, you might be right-- because about 75 percent of the fish on display at the Fair this year have also been featured at the DNR's exhibits at the State Fair during previous years.

The DNR actually runs a live stream and Fish Cam on their Facebook page, which you can check out HERE. And if you're curious, the DNR's Fish Pond is part of the DNR's park and display at the State Fair, which is located at the corner of Judson Avenue and Nelson Street.
