Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The dense haze from the wildfires burning in Canada is beginning to withdraw from Minnesota this evening.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says the arrival of a cold front in western Minnesota this afternoon has also brought a shift in the winds that should push most of the dense smoke out of Minnesota by tomorrow morning. The improvement in air quality should be noticeable in central and western Minnesota this evening while southern Minnesota may have to wait until tomorrow morning.

An air quality alert remains in effect for the southern two-thirds of Minnesota until midnight. Conditions in southeastern Minnesota could actually worsen this evening before improving overnight. As of 5 PM, the air quality index in the Rochester area was 165. Any reading above 150 is considered unhealthy for everyone.

The MPCA is forecasting moderate air-quality conditions by tomorrow morning with the air-quality index dropping below 100 across the entire state.
