Residents Warned After Black Bear Spotted in SE Minnesota City
Northfield, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Northfield Police Department today issued a warning to the communities residents that a black bear has been sighted in the city.
The advisory requests that citizens bring birdfeeders and garbage cans inside for the next week in an effort to encourage the bear to return to its natural habitat. Northfield Police indicated the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was contacted and the DNR also advises that everyone leave the bear alone and not approach it.
Northfield Police Chief Mark Elliott says there were two sightings of the adult black bear in and near Northfield Friday and early Saturday. The first sighting was in the southern part of Northfield around 11 PM and it was later seen by Northfield Police Officers around 2:30 AM along Highway 3.
The DNR has more information concerning dealing with bears that wander into urban areas on the agency's website.
