Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man was arrested Sunday after Rochester police say he tried breaking into an apartment and then assaulted a man inside the unit.

Police say a 66-year-old man and his 64-year-old wife were in the apartment in the 600 block of 19th St NW around 8:00 PM when they noticed someone trying to open the door.

The man opened the door and saw a stranger standing there. The stranger told the couple they were being evicted and to leave. As the man in the apartment started closing the door, the stranger pushed him to the floor and punched him in the face. The stranger left and the victims called 911.

Officers arrived to find some other tenants detaining the suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old Richard Souhrada. Police say he is homeless. He was arrested on burglary and assault charges.

Court records show Souhrada was given a 39-month prison sentence in 2018 for an assault conviction involving a 6-year-old boy in Austin. He was accused of becoming upset with the boy and throwing him against a wall. The boy suffered a broken arm.
