Flea Purchases Two-Home California Compound for $4.25 Million
Mere weeks after listing his Los Feliz area estate at nearly $3 million, Flea is on his way to "higher ground," having purchased a two home compound in the foothills overlooking La Crescenta, Calif. According to Variety, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist spent $4.25 million on the property, which has a storied history on the market.
Owners of the estate are painter Lari Pittman and visual artist Roy Dowell, who originally put it on the market for $7.9 million in 2014, dropped the asking price significantly to $4.5 million before settling on the current sale price. Sharing a border with the Angeles National Forest, the 5.7-acre hillside location is 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It features two residences plus an open-air entertainment pavilion set amid a desert garden.
The more recently built of the two homes, designed in 2009 by celebrated architect Michael Maltza, was featured in Architectural Record and has been honored with three awards from the American Institute of Architects. Known for an unorthodox design, the one-bedroom, seven-sided structure is "dissected and portioned into a series of triangles and polygons" that reveals rooms in a pinwheeling progression rather than the traditional linear fashion.
The older home is known as the Dorothy Serulnic Residence, which was designed in 1952 by Austrian-American modernist architect Richard Neutra for his secretary and her husband who resided in the house. The 1,350-square-foot open-plan residence has two bedrooms, one bath, walls of glass, a Bear Valley stone fireplace, and interesting built-ins including a "sliding" kitchen table. It was sold to Pittman in 1998 for $485,000. Select photos of both residences can be seen below.
Flea and his wife still own a Malibu compound that they purchased in 2006. As previously stated, Flea had previously owned another property in the Griffith Park area, selling the Van Griffith estate in 2014 for $6 million that was recently sold again for $7.75 million.
