FDA Recalls 77 Potentially Toxic Hand Sanitizers
Hand sanitizers sold at Walmart and Target are now listed in new FDA recalls because they contain methanol which can be toxic. 77 different hand sanitizers are now included in the recall.
Young children who might accidentally consume these products are at the highest risk of methanol poisoning, according to the FDA, as well as teens or adults who are using these hand sanitizers as a substitute for alcohol.
The FDA warning says, "Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk."
