DWI Suspect Accused of Assaulting Rochester Police Officer
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A 22-year-old Rochester man has been jailed for allegedly assaulting a police officer. The incident occurred early Sunday during a traffic stop near St. Mary's Hospital after an officer on patrol spotted a vehicle speeding on 2nd Street Southwest.
A spokesman says the driver, identified as Trystin Johnson, smelled of alcohol and a preliminary test put his blood-alcohol-concentration at .16, which is double the legal limit for driving. After two officers placed him in handcuffs, Johnson began resisting and according to the police report, challenged them to a fight saying if he came out the winner they would have to cut him loose.
When the officers declined his challenge and began placing Johnson in a squad car he allegedly responded by kicking the side of the vehicle and while the officers worked to prevent him from further damaging the police car he turned and kicked a third officer in the groin. Luckily, the officer did not require medical treatment.
Johnson is expected to face multiple DWI charges and a 4th-degree assault charge for kicking the police officer.
