Charges: Rochester Man Caught in the Act of Copper Wire Theft
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Olmsted County Attorney’s Office has filed charges against a Rochester man they say was caught in the act of a copper wire theft over the weekend.
Charges filed Monday indicate Rochester police officers responded to a reported burglary in the 800 block of Broadway Ave. North shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, police found 33-year-old August Shimkus II in the hallway of a building, holding coated strands of copper wire, the criminal complaint says.
Officers searched Shimkus and also found a wire-cutter, pliers and a knife, tools law enforcement says are frequently used in copper wire thefts, according to the complaint. Shimkus was formally charged Monday with felony second-degree burglary and felony possession of burglar tools.
Shimkus was released without bail but with conditions. His next court appearance is November 10.
