Cancer-Causing Agent Reason for Recall of Popular Sunscreen in Minnesota

Before you spray that sunscreen, you need to check the recall below because one was just issued for a popular product in Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and throughout the entire United States.  Edgewell Personal Care Company has voluntarily recalled some of their Banana Boat products due to benzene being detected in the product.

Edgewell Personal Care Company has voluntarily recalled several Banana Boat products due to a cancer-causing agent.

According to FDA.gov, several Banana Boat products were recalled throughout the nation after an internal review found that there were trace levels of a cancer-causing agent, benzene, in some of the samples as the spray was coming out of the product.

The following products are part of the recall and the info below includes the UPC, Description, Lot Code, Expiration Date, and Size:

• 0-79656-04041-8 Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 20016AF December 2022 6 oz
• 0-79656-04041-8 Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 20084BF February 2023 6 oz
• 0-79656-04041-8 Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 21139AF April 2024 6 oz

According to the recall listed on the FDA.gov website, "no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.".

Benzene, a human carcinogen, is the reason for the voluntary product recall

The products above were sold in the United States and are reported to contain benzene, a human carcinogen.  According to the recall on fda.gov, "exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening."   You can read more here.
