5 Area Law Enforcement Agencies Helped Nab Suspect Near Mazeppa
Mazeppa, MN (KROC-AM News) - A law enforcement pursuit of an assault suspect ended last night in the Mazeppa area with a search effort that included five law enforcement agencies.
The Wabasha County Sheriff's Department says the chase began around 11:30 p.m. after it received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the end of the driveway near Mazeppa. The caller also reported hearing numerous gunshots and officials say the vehicle matched the description of one driven by a man wanted in Red Wing for an attempted shooting and the assault of a family member.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree in Mazeppa and the driver fled into a sandpit and wooded area. The State Patrol, Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, and Zumbrota Police responded to the scene to assist Wabasha County deputies. A news release says the State Patrol helicopter was able to locate the suspect, who was eventually apprehended by a K-9 officer. He is undergoing treatment for injuries he suffered while he was being taken into custody.
Officials also say a handgun was later recovered from the wreckage of the crashed vehicle along with some spent shell casings. They also say the man, whose name has not been released, is a convicted felon wanted on an active warrant issued by Washington State and has made threats of shooting law enforcement officers in the past.
