Once again, Rochester Public Utilities is giving away trees-- and you can get one this Friday (April 30th).

National Arbor Day is here-- it's always celebrated on the last Friday in April, don'tcha know-- and once again, Rochester Public Utilities is getting in the spirit by giving away free trees.

In case you're curious, National Arbor Day is a day set aside to plant trees, as the first settlers in Nebraska City, Nebraska did back in 1872. They missed the forests that were common out east and so they planted trees to try to recreate the same thing on the plains of Nebraska. It became a national day observed in all 50 states in 1920.

And here's what National Arbor Day is all about, according to the Arbor Day Foundation:

While most holidays celebrate something that has already happened and is worth remembering, Arbor Day represents a hope for the future. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.

And for the 19th year, RPU is helping keep that spirit alive by giving away free trees. Their Arbor Day Event isn't happening again this year, thanks to the pandemic, but you CAN still get a free seedling Friday (April 30) from 11 am to 1 pm at Silver Lake Park in Rochester.

RUP is partnering with Maier Tree & LawnRochester Parks & RecreationSargent's Gardens, and Jim Whiting Nursery & Garden Center to give away FREE Bur Oak Tree seedlings-- while supplies last-- at Three Links – Silver Lake Park (840 7th St NE in Rochester)

Trees sure can make your yard more inviting-- and make it one of those places people would really visit or live. Kind of like quaint small towns where tower oak trees line the main street. Keep scrolling to check out some small towns where those Main Streets still exist-- in THESE top small towns where people REALLY want to live!
