Winona, MN (KROC AM News) –The criminal complaint filed in a Winona murder/arson case indicates a man was apparently killed by a hammer, not the fire that broke out in his home.

Second degree murder and arson charges have been filed against 32-year-old Steve Miller.

He became an early suspect in the March 25th fire at a duplex after paperwork found inside included his name. The body of 55-year-old David Seaman was also found in the home. An autopsy found he had multiple skull fractures and no evidence of smoke inhalation and his death was ruled a homicide.

A can of camp stove fuel was also found in his home, the apparent source of the fire. Investigators later determined Miller had purchased an identical can just hours before the fire was reported.

The complaint says Miller told investigators he had lived with the victim. He said he was “pretty sure” he attacked the victim and “hit him with a hammer” while he was high on methamphetamine and mushrooms. Miller said he was in a “rage induced drug coma” at the time but wasn’t angry with the victim. He also said two other people were with him at the time of the attack.

Miller was already in jail when the complaint was filed after being arrested on a burglary charge.
