St Paul (KROC AM News) - The list of candidates for 2022 Minnesota Teacher of the Year has been narrowed to 25.

Two of the semifinalists are from southeast Minnesota.

Education Minnesota made the announcement Tuesday.

The organization says an independent selection panel of 22 community leaders chose the semifinalists from an initial field of 77 candidates from across the state.

The two seminfinalist from southeast Minnesota are Kevin Gentz, an Albert Lea High School math teacher and John Schneider, a teacher at Austin’s Banfield Elementary School.

The panel will next review the semifinalists’ portfolios again and review semifinalist video submissions and select about 10 finalists from among the group.

Current Minnesota Teacher of the Year Natalia Benjamin of Rochester will announce her successor at the annual banquet, tentatively scheduled for May 1.
