Toy Boat Found in WI Had Floated on Lake Superior For 26 Years
A toy boat that was recently found in Wisconsin had taken quite the journey across Lake Superior.
If you've ever put a message in a bottle and tossed it out into the ocean, you can relate to the amazing journey of which this wooden toy boat has taken. It was recently found washed up on shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin, in the Apostle Island National Lakeshore near Eagle Island.
On the bottom of the boat were the words, "I am traveling to the ocean. Please put me back in the water. Will you send information on your whereabouts to: Lakewood School Room 116 & 118 5207 N. Tischer Duluth, MN (scribbled out zip code) 53304"
However, there was no date on the inscription on the bottom toy ship to help determine just how long it had been sailing the high seas of the Big Lake They Call Gitchee Gumee. As you can see in the photos below, the boat DID look a little worn and weathered. And, as it turns out, for good reason-- because the little toy ship had been bobbing around on Lake Superior since... 1994!
According to the Duluth Public Schools Facebook page, the toy boat in the picture (along with another boat) was launched over 26 years ago by Bonnie Fritch, a teacher at Lakewood Elementary School in Duluth as part of a student project that mapped out how canoes once traveled over the Great Lakes. Students helped set boats off on their journey across Lake Superior at Lake Superior's Brighton Beach before the end of the school year in 1994.
It's amazing to think of the many hundreds of miles that little boat has traveled over its 26 years on the massive body of water that is Lake Superior, only to be found 26 years later on a shore completely across the lake! Check out all the pictures and more of the story below.
