Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Another longtime downtown Rochester landmark may soon be gone.

The new owner of the Post Bulletin property is seeking city approval to clear the site for redevelopment.

If approved, the building that has been at the corner of 1st St and 1st Ave SE for nearly 70 years will disappear for good. Another building on the site is also facing demolition.

The original Post Bulletin building was constructed on the southwest corner of the property in the early 1950’s and remodeled and added onto in 1969 and 1988 and 2003. The newspaper operation was purchased by Forum Communications in 2017. The purchase did not include the property, which was sold last year.

A firm known as PB Rochester Investments, LLC now owns the property. The firm is asking the city “to proceed with adoption of a resolution indicating the building is substandard and also to enter into an Early Demolition Agreement. By doing so, the right to create and certify a Redevelopment Tax increment District on the property is preserved for a 3 year period.”

The firm’s request indicates a recent inspection “determined that the building located upon the property is substandard and in need of substantial renovation or clearance as defined in the TIF statutes.”

The request is scheduled for consideration by the City Council at its Monday meeting.
