UPDATE: The Big Ten will kick off its football season the weekend of October 24th according to the Star Tribune.

The league says the decision to start the season was based on information provided by the Big Ten Return to Competition Task Force. A statement from the BIg Ten said, “The Big Ten will require student-athletes, coaches, trainers and other individuals that are on the field for all practices and games to undergo daily antigen testing. Test results must be completed and recorded prior to each practice or game. Student-athletes who test positive for the coronavirus through point of contact (POC) daily testing would require a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to confirm the result of the POC test.”

On August 11th the Big Ten canceled all fall sports seasons and since then we've heard various rumors about when/if the seasons would be made up. Some reports said January, others indicated the Fall season would start around Thanksgiving. Now, ESPN is citing unnamed sources that say the league will announce its football season will kick off in October later today.

The ESPN report says, "The league's entire council of presidents and chancellors met for several hours Sunday afternoon with members of the return to competition task force, which plans for scheduling and television. The medical subcommittee reviewed the latest medical information about a safe resumption of play during the coronavirus pandemic, and the task force also met Saturday with eight presidents or chancellors."

Sources told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a proposal has been approved. The Wisconsin newspaper says the start date is still unclear, but "the latest proposal submitted to the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors featured an Oct. 17 kickoff."
