‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Reveals New Details of Sean Astin Role
It made perfect sense of Stranger Things to look to the original Goonies cast in Season 2, and it seems Sean Astin may have a more involved role than we thought. Star David Harbour reveals new details of the summer hit’s second year, including the current state of Hawkins, Indiana after the incident.
You’re warned of minor Stranger Things Season 2 spoilers from here on out, but where initial announcements of Astin’s role identified his character as Bob Newby, a “kindhearted former nerd,” RadioShack owner and high school acquaintance to Joyce and Hopper, Harbour took the description a step further. Speaking at a Fan2Sea Comic Con cruise over the weekend (via HollywoodLife), the man under Hopper’s hat teased that Astin’s character would serve as romantic rival:
We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend — much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police.
In addition to reiterating that Barb’s death would weigh heavily on Nancy toward the beginning of Season 2 (gotta have that Barb update), Harbour also teased that Hawkins would be largely unaware of the chaos that unfurled a year prior:
It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — [like] Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened. So there’s a lot of fall out with who knows what.
Elsewhere of Stranger Things Season 2, we know shooting will take place in Atlanta through April for a summer premiere. The story will pick up in the fall of 1984, while creators Matt and Ross Duffer have teased a James Cameron sequel influence in crafting the second chapter. We’ll also learn more about the Demogorgon and Upside Down, as teased in our exclusive concept art piece, while Sadie Sink and Power Rangers star Dacre Montgomery have been added to the cast in regular roles, along with Brett Gelman, Aliens baddie Paul Reiser, and actress Linnea Berthelsen.
More Stranger Things details are surely coming, including a list of directors, but will Season 2 finally get Joyce and Hopper together?
