Some Believe These Caterpillars Can Predict How Bad Winter Will Be
Have you noticed these caterpillars crawling around your property? My kids hunt for them every night and have found a ton this year. I didn't know the legend behind them until I saw a post from the National Weather Service in La Cross that said, "There are quite a few woolly bear caterpillars out and about today! According to folklore, the amount of black vs. brown on the caterpillar can help "predict" the severity of winter. The longer the woolly bear's black bands, the colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Whereas the wider the middle brown band, the milder the upcoming winter. Here are a few we found around the office... not sure what to predict from this variety. 😬 What kind of woolly bear caterpillars have you seen?"
I'll be paying close attention to their color markings when my kids find them from now on because I'm looking for any kind of sign showing this winter won't be as bad as it's predicted to be.
