In a new interview with the New York Times, Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten commented on the state of modern punk bands and subsequently put Green Day on blast. "It is embarrassing, really," he said of punk bands with "spiky haircuts, trying to keep 1978 alive."

He continued, "How many bands are out there like Green Day now? I look at them, and I just have to laugh. They’re coat hangers, you know. A turgid version of something that doesn’t actually belong to them.”

He went on to say that punk has become a "caricature" of its former self, and a "perfect backdrop to sell a pair of sneakers."

This isn't the first time Rotten has criticized Green Day. In 2012, the singer spoke to Rolling Stone about his disdain for the band. "I’ve never been a fan of them," he said. "I just don’t understand it. I think it’s kind of a tinny, two-bob version of something that was far deeper and carried more significance. And, uh, that for me, as a band, they’re not very significant. They’re a mélange. They’re closer to Billy Idol than myself."

How do you feel about the different eras of punk that the two groups occupied? Is one more reputable than the other? Or is punk simply punk? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
