Service Celebrating Life of Rochester Mayor Hazama Scheduled in June
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A service celebrating the life of former Mayor Chuck Hazama will take place next summer.
Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home in Rochester today posted an obituary prepared by Hazama's family, which indicates the service will take place on June 22nd at the Congregational Church in Rochester. He passed away on Sunday at age 89 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Hazama was elected Rochester Mayor in 1979 and served 8 consecutive terms until he decided not to seek re-election in 1995. Much of his focus during his first few terms in office was on helping to lead the effort to secure funding for Rochester's flood control project after the city was devastated by record flooding in 1978. His first decade in office also saw a major revitalization of downtown Rochester and Hazama's launch of the annual Rochesterfest celebration.
His obituary also listed Rochester being named an All-American City and the Number 1 Place to Live in America by Money Magazine among his many accomplishments.
