Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester motorists will have to be mindful of where they park on public streets later this week.

The city’s seasonal parking policy takes effect Thursday.

This will mark the second year of the policy that will be in effect through May 1st.  The ordinance requires alternate side parking for vehicles parked on city streets and in the bulb (circular part) of cul-de-sacs from 2:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Vehicles are to be parked on the side of the street with EVEN house numbers when the calendar date is EVEN and with ODD house numbers when the calendar date is ODD.

While vehicles can be parked on both sides of the street in the evening hours, drivers should park overnight for the requirements that are in place the following day.

The ordinance does not apply to metered spaces.

Public Works Director Wendy Turri: “Alternative side parking requirements allow crews to be more efficient and effective with seasonal street maintenance activities like street sweeping and snow removal. The result is streets that are easier and safer to navigate all winter long.”

She says starting the seasonal parking requirements on October 1 simplifies the work of the street sweepers. Removing leaves, grass clippings, and other yard debris from the curbline helps prevent localized flooding due to blocked storm drains and culverts. “The street sweeping program protects the health of our creeks and rivers by keeping algae-fueling nutrients from decomposing leaves and other debris out of the waterways,” says Turri.
