Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It’s that time of the year for local governments in Minnesota to take the first step in deciding property tax increases for next year.

The Rochester City Council Monday will vote on a recommended property tax levy of $79.5-million, an increase of nearly $5-million (6.5%) from the 2019 budget.

The increase would be the smallest in four years.

The 2019 levy of $74.7-million was 9-percent higher than the year before.The 2018 levy rose 10-percent from the previous year to $68.5-million. The 2017 levy was nearly 10-percent higher than the year before.

The figure the council settles on during its Monday meeting will be the highest it can be 2020. The final figure will be adopted in December,

The Olmsted County Board will also set its maximum 2020 property tax levy on Tuesday.

It will consider a recommended levy of nearly $108-million, a 4.5-percent increase over the 2019 figure. The county’s 2019 levy of $103-million was 5-percent higher than the 2018 figure of $98.4-million, which was a 7-percent increase from the year before.
