The 20th annual Rochester Polar Plunge for Special Olympics is taking place this afternoon in the cold, but not ice-covered, water of Foster Arend Pond.

This year's event was postponed due to the COVID pandemic and the number of plungers is limited to maintain social distancing and other mitigation measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Sheriff Kevin Torgerson, who has been one of the main organizers of the annual event from day one, says their goal was to have 400 plungers instead of the usual 800 to 1000.
