Rochester Park Board Approves Law Enforcement Memorial
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Those involved in the planning of a law enforcement memorial in Rochester can finally move ahead and it’s possible it will open next summer.
The Rochester Park Board Monday approved the proposed Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation of Southeast Minnesota that will be located at Soldiers Field Park.
The decision came three years after the board approved the site for the memorial.
Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson has been one of the leaders of the memorial project that began several years ago. He says current plans call for groundbreaking to take place next spring and he expects it will open to the public by July or August.
Torgerson says the organization has already received financial and in-kind donations, including a significant contribution from Titan Development. He says Monday’s decision clears the way to step up donation efforts. He says funds will also be needed to establish a permanent fund for maintenance and upgrade expenses.
Torgerson says the memorial is meant “to honor fallen officers from municipal, state, federal and military agencies operating in Rice, Steele, Freeborn, Mower, Dodge, Olmsted, Goodhue, Wabasha, Winona, Fillmore, and Houston counties."
It will be located just west of the Veterans Memorial.
