Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council has directed staff to begin negotiations on a cable TV franchise agreement with Metronet.

The Indiana-based company has indicated it wants to set up a cable TV operation in the city. Staff expects to report back to the council in about a month.

A firm was hired by the city to examine MetroNet’s legal, technical and financial qualifications to operate a cable communications system. Its report found MetroNet “ possesses the requisite legal, technical and financial qualifications to operate a cable communication system with the City.”

Also at Monday night’s meeting, the council approved a $1.1-million bid for renovation work at the Chateau Theater building. The work will include roofing, windows and doors. Also included in the renovation project is the removal of the second floor and escalator. The work is needed to “allow activation of the space.”

DMC funds will be used to pay for the work.
