Rochester Man Charged With Deadly Crash Back in Jail

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man accused of causing the death of a Rochester teenager by speeding through a busy intersection while driving drunk is back in jail and is currently being held without bail.

Court records indicate 34-year-old Sterling Haukom was taken into custody Tuesday night for alleged repeated violations involving his court-ordered electronic alcohol monitoring, which was among the conditions of his release from the Olmsted County Jail on a $30,000 bond earlier this month. A motion filed by prosecutors today requests that Haukom's bail be increased to $100,000.

The Rochester man is charged with criminal vehicular homicide and DWI in connection with a traffic crash on February 23rd in southeast Rochester that took the life of 18-year-old Erika Cruz. The charges against Haukom allege he was speeding at over 60 miles per hour just seconds before the deadly collision. A blood test put his blood-alcohol-concentration at .25, or more than three times the legal limit, following the crash near Lincoln Elementary School.

A hearing on the prosecution request for higher bail is scheduled to take place Thursday afternoon.
