Rochester Has Free Salt and Sand For Your Sidewalks This Winter
Now that the cold weather, ice and snow are back here in Minnesota, so are icy sidewalks and driveways. So it's nice to know the city of Rochester has your back-- literally-- when it comes to making sure you don't fall this winter.
Did you know Rochester has a free salt and sand mix that you can spread on your driveway sidewalks again this year? It's true-- it's completely free. All you need to do is bring your bucket and shovel and help yourself.
And, in case you didn't know, it's a city ordinance that property owners in Rochester keep their sidewalks clear of ice and snow. (In fact, you have 24 hours to do so after it snows, or else you could be fined!) So, this is a handy way to make sure those sidewalks and driveways aren't too slick.
You can find this free salt/sand mixture at two locations: near the YMCA downtown, off 1st Avenue and at the Northbrook Shopping Center. The YMCA location is only a few blocks away from the Quick Country 96.5 Worldwide Headquarters, so I stopped by last winter and filled up a 5-gallon bucket and still have plenty leftover for this winter. So far, that is-- who knows how much snow we'll actually get this year!
Here's a handy reminder, though: Be sure you have both a bucket and shovel with you-- the city doesn't provide those. And, seeing as I forgot to bring along a shovel, I'd have been out of luck, if it weren't for the very generous fellow Rochesterite who let me borrow theirs.
